Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe made up of nine federal states, with Vienna as its capital. A member of the European Union since 1995, it is known for its Alpine scenery, with mountains covering more than half of its territory. The highest peak, the Großglockner, reaches 3797 m above sea level. The Danube flows through Austria. The climate is temperate, with cool winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is spring and summer, when nature is at its most beautiful.
